Big Island man shot with spear

A Big Island man was shot with a spear gun yesterday in a case police are classifying as attempted murder.

The victim, Wendell Kahaialii, 28, was taken to Kona Community Hospital in critical condition. His condition was upgraded to guarded last night.

Police said Kahaialii, who has no permanent address, called 911 at about 2:30 a.m. from a Kauhola Street address in Kona's Kaloko Industrial Area to report the attack.

A 22-year-old Kona man is being sought in connection with the case.


WINDWARD O'AHU

Six injured in Kane'ohe crash

Six people were injured, two critically, in a head-on collision in Kane'ohe yesterday.

At 8:32 a.m., a Honda Accord traveling eastbound on Mokulele Street crossed the center line and collided with a Ford Bronco, police said.

The 28-year-old woman driving the Accord and her 38-year-old male passenger were taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

The 50-year-old man driving the Bronco and his 18-year-old son were taken to Castle Hospital in serious condition. A 46-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy, both passengers in the Bronco, were taken to Queen's in serious condition.

Police are investigating the accident.

Swap meet set at retail center

The Gentry Waipio Shopping Center will hold a community swap meet from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday on the shopping center grounds. The swap meet is free to the public.


HONOLULU

Five homeless after Makiki fire

An apartment fire in Makiki left five people homeless yesterday.

The two men and three women will be put up in a hotel by the Red Cross for a few nights while they look for other accommodations, said Beth Kuch of the Red Cross.

No one was injured in the fire at 1067 Green St., said Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada, and the blaze was contained within the ground-floor apartment of the three-story walkup.

The fire was caused by an open flame that got out of control. Damage was listed as $40,000 to the building and $10,000 to the contents.


Man shot in Kalihi dispute

A man was shot in the chest last night after an argument in Kalihi, authorities said.

A woman received head injuries in the incident.

Police and emergency crews were called to the 2500 block of Kalihi Street shortly before 10:30 p.m.

The man was in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center, said Emergency Medical Services District Chief Kaipo Asing.

The woman was listed in serious condition at Queen's.
