Surfer Garcia released from hospital in Australia

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Hawai'i surfer Sunny Garcia was released from a hospital today, one day after getting into trouble while competing in the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, Australia.

Garcia was carried from the water's edge at Bells Beach yesterday after suffering from what appeared to be a severe migraine headache or a pinched nerve in his neck, tournament officials said.

Garcia was taken to Geelong Hospital, where tests were performed and he was kept overnight for observation.

He had been leading Taylor Knox of California in the third round, but was forced to withdraw with 10 minutes left.

Garcia, a three-time Rip Curl Pro winner and 2000 world champion, was out of action the last 12 months following knee reconstruction.

• HPU's Reyes gets nine RBIs in game: Jamie Reyes batted 4 for 4 with two homers and a school-record nine RBIs as Hawai'i Pacific routed host Montana State-Billings, 17-3, yesterday to earn a split of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader.

Reyes hit a three-run homer and two-run triple during a 10-run second inning. She added a grand slam in the fifth — the final inning because of the mercy rule.

Reyes, a junior centerfielder from Kaimuki High School, broke Ho'o Naki's school record of six RBIs set in 2000.

Billings won the first game, 6-4, behind homers from four different players.

HPU is 15-15 overall and 6-9 in the PacWest, while Billings is 19-26 and 3-12.
