Suspect sought in Kona shooting

Big Island police are seeking a 22-year-old Kona man for attempted murder after he allegedly shot another man Sunday with a spear gun.

Mark Dean Kalalau, of the Kaloko Industrial Area of Kona, is 6 feet tall, weighs about 175 pounds and has short black hair and brown eyes, police said.

Police said they were called at 2:30 a.m. Sunday by Wendell Kahaialii, 28, who said he was shot in the abdomen with a spear gun at Kalalau's Kauhola Street address.

Officers took Kahaialii to Kona Community Hospital, where he was reported in guarded condition yesterday.

Anyone with information on Kalalau's whereabouts is asked to call the West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section at (808) 326-4232 or the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311. Anyone who sees Kalalau should not approach him, police said.

Kahuku Shrimp under EPA order

The Environmental Protection Agency has ordered Kahuku Shrimp Co. to make changes to reduce the discharge of nitrogen-rich wastewater from its ponds.

The EPA said the company from February 2002 to January 2004 discharged water that was unacceptably high in nitrates, and violated its wastewater discharge permit.

"This is a minor housekeeping issue," said Kahuku Shrimp president Bruce Smith. "We just heard from them last week and we're preparing our response. But the work was already well under way."

Kane'ohe pool yet to reopen

The Kane'ohe District Park pool remains closed while the contractor repairs faulty workmanship at the newly renovated facility.

The pool was scheduled to open in December.

"The opening of the Kane'ohe pool is being delayed due to tile delaminating," said Carol Costa, city spokeswoman. "This was found during the final inspection period."

Costa couldn't say when the pool would reopen.

Work to close H-2, H-3 lanes

All Honolulu-bound lanes of H-2 Freeway from the Wahiawa to Waipi'o interchanges will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday for roadway improvements, the state Department of Transportation said.

Workers will replace expansion joints on Kipapa Bridge, clean drains, make lighting repairs and replace striping. The Waipi'o Interchange on-ramp will remain open, but on-ramps north of there will be closed.

In addition, the Honolulu-bound lanes of H-3 Freeway between the Halekou and Halawa interchanges will be closed from 7 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday for maintenance and tunnel cleaning.

Kuhio project tops agenda

The city's Kuhio Avenue renovation project will be discussed at the Waikiki Neighborhood Board meeting at 7 p.m. today in the Waikiki Community Center, 310 Paoakalani Ave.

The Kuhio Avenue construction will widen the sidewalks and install a median for the city's planned BRT rapid transit project, but the work has resulted in narrow traffic lanes, which bus drivers have said are not safe.

Man sought in stabbing

Police were looking for a man who stabbed a 17-year-old boy in the shoulder in Halawa yesterday.

The boy was not seriously injured, police said.

Police said the suspect drove up to the youth on Kalaloa Street at about 2:30 p.m., got out and stabbed the boy. He got back into his car and fled. Police did not say what led to the attack.

The suspect was described as in his late 20s or early 30s, with a slim build. Police said he was wearing a red T-shirt, red shorts and red shoes.
