Woman charged in Kalihi shooting

A 44-year-old woman was charged yesterday with shooting her estranged husband Sunday night during an argument at a Kalihi Street home.

Gwendolyn Carol Yomes was charged yesterday with attempted murder, first-degree terroristic threatening and two firearm offenses. Her total bail is $200,000.

Yomes is accused of shooting her husband, Stephen Yomes, in the stomach with a .38-caliber revolver that is registered in her name. According to court documents, Yomes' cousin Pam Kaanana witnessed the shooting at 2539 Kalihi St.

Stephen Yomes was taken to The Queen's Medical Center "in a condition that placed him in serious risk of death," the police affidavit said. His current condition is unknown.

Stranded boys led to safety

Two 16-year-old boys stranded by darkness on the trail to the Wa'ahila ridge, which separates Palolo and Manoa valleys, were escorted to safety shortly after midnight by fire rescue specialists.

The boys, who were brought out at 12:10 a.m. today, were not injured, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Emmit Kane.

Kane said the boys started hiking the trail at the end of Carlos Long Street late yesterday afternoon and were about two hours in when they used a cellular phone to call for help at 7 p.m. Fire rescue specialists hiked in and located the boys at about 10 p.m.
