THE LEFT LANE
Farewell song

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Tomorrow night at the Merrie Monarch Festival hula competition, Miss Aloha Hula 2003, Jennifer Kehaulani Oyama, dances her farewell. The choice of song is left to the outgoing Miss — a pleasant departure, since most competition songs are selected by kumu hula.

Last week, while she was helping hula sister Natasha Mahealani Akau polish her hand- and footwork, Oyama would say only that her hula brothers and sisters will provide the music for her in choral style, and will perform some of her favorite songs. But she wasn't saying which songs, or giving away any details about her dress or adornments.

Check The Advertiser's Island Life section tomorrow for a story about the Miss Aloha Hula experience. Read reporter Wanda Adams' Merrie Monarch Web log at honoluluadvertiser.com. And tune in from 6 p.m. on KITV tomorrow for coverage of the Miss Aloha Hula competition.

'Kill Bill' meets 'Idol'

"You know what they call a quarter-pounder with cheese in France?"

Anyone who's watched "Pulp Fiction" knows it's a "Roy-el with cheese," according to John Travolta's character, Vincent Vega. Tonight, "American Idol" fans get to meet the maker of Pulp-speak, "Kill Bill," and some of the best movie lines ever. Quentin Tarantino is slated to be the guest judge on "American Idol" for its "Movie-theme" songs. The show was bumped to tonight at 7 because of President Bush's speech yesterday. The results show will be at 7 tomorrow night.

Terror worries teens

The latest Gallup Poll found that 4 in 10 teens (39 percent) are either "very" or "somewhat" worried that they or someone in their families will become victims of terrorism, while 60 percent are "not too worried" or "not at all worried."

A year ago, 50 percent of teens said they worried that they or someone in their families would fall victim to terrorists.
