Rescuers search for two hikers

Fire rescue crews searched last night for two men who lost their way while hiking in Palolo Valley.

They began hiking on a trail off Carlos Long Street late yesterday afternoon and, two hours later, realized it was getting dark, said Fire Department Capt. Emmit Kane. He said the hikers were not prepared for the darkness and used a cellular telephone to call for help shortly after 7 p.m.

Firefighters on the ground as well as in the Air One helicopter searched for them late into the night. Kane said rescuers had hoped to catch up with the stranded hikers on foot, but had not done so as of about 10 p.m.

Kane said the search would resume this morning if they were not found

Suspect held in spear gun attack

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police arrested a 22-year-old Kona man on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly shot another man in the abdomen Sunday with a spear gun.

Markdean Kalalau, who turned himself in to Kona police at 9:15 p.m. Monday, is in police custody pending further investigation.

Wendell Kahaialii, 28, of no permanent address, told police he was wounded by the spear gun at Kalalau's Kauhola Street address. Kahaialii remains in guarded condition at Kona Community Hospital.

Explosive set off at Kea'au High

HILO, Hawai'i — Someone set off what may have been a pipe bomb on the Kea'au High School campus Monday, the second bomb to explode on campus this year.

Police said someone placed an explosive device in a vent hole in a concrete wall on the west end of the campus during the noon lunch hour and detonated it.

No one was injured, but the explosion caused minor damage to the wall, police said.

Investigators recovered metal fragments from the bomb site that suggest the device may be a homemade pipe bomb.

Anyone with information about the bombing is asked to call Detective Tom Poy of the East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2383 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

In January a homemade bomb exploded on campus, and police arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with that case. The youth was charged with criminal property damage.

Crash-and-run truck sought

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police are seeking a truck that apparently ran into the main building of the Church of the Holy Cross on West Lanikaula Street in Hilo sometime late Monday or early yesterday.

Investigators said the vehicle left the scene, leaving behind half of its front bumper with a Mazda B-2000 emblem on it.

The crash knocked a hole in the wall of the church building. There was no estimate of the cost to repair the damage, police said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Officer Tod Bello at 961-2213 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
