Shark sighted, Maui beaches closed

Advertiser Staff

KIHEI, Maui — A shark was sighted this morning off Cove Park, prompting state officials to close all the beaches within one mile.

The beaches, including the three popular Kama'ole beach parks in Kihei, were to remain closed for at least two hours. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources was expected to reopen the beaches late this morning if no other sharks were spotted in the area.

The county’s ocean safety officers were assisting DLNR enforcement personnel in monitoring the situation.

A shark killed a surfer last week in waters off West Maui’s Pohaku Park.
