Kaua'i Historical Society marks 90th year

Advertiser Staff

The Kaua'i Historical Society will celebrate its 90th year this month with a royal ball and an art exhibition celebrating its 1914 founding and honoring the island's history and historians.

The Ship Store Galleries at Coconut Marketplace and the society will co-sponsor "Days Gone By," an art show and champagne reception from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the gallery. It will include original art, plus vintage photography from the Kaua'i Historical Society archives, reproduced as giclée prints. The exhibit will remain on display through May 15. Artwork and photo prints will be for sale, and a portion of proceeds will go to the historical society.

The ball, titled "Classic Hawaiian Melodies," is also the society's main fund-raiser. It is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. April 24 at the Kaua'i Marriott Resort, including a five-course dinner, silent auction, live auction, music and dancing. The Royal Serenaders with Aaron Mahi and soprano Cathy Foy will perform Hawaiian music from the late 1800s to the 1940s, and Blaine Kia and his hula halau will dance. Tickets are $75.

The society documents and preserves the history of the island with extensive archives and regular public talks, walking tours and publications. Its Web site is www.kauaihistoricalsociety.org. For more information, call at 245-3373 or e-mail khs@hawaiilink.net.
