Stranded hikers led to safety
Two 16-year-old boys stranded on the trail to the Wa'ahila ridge, which separates Palolo and Manoa valleys, were escorted to safety shortly after midnight yesterday by fire rescue specialists.
The boys, who were brought out at 12:10 a.m. yesterday, were not injured, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Emmit Kane.
Kane said the boys started hiking the trail at the end of Carlos Long Street late Tuesday afternoon and were about two hours in when they used a cellular phone to call for help at 7 p.m. Fire rescue specialists hiked in and found them at about 10 p.m.

Man charged in spear gun case
A 22-year-old Kona man was charged yesterday with assault for allegedly shooting another man with a spear gun Sunday.
Markdean Kalalau Jr. of a Kaloko Industrial Park address was being held yesterday on $30,000 bail. He is accused of shooting Wendell Kahaialii, 28, in the abdomen.
Kahaialii was in guarded condition yesterday at Kona Community Hospital.
Water main bursts in Po'ipu
PO'IPU, Kaua'i An aged water main serving the Po'ipu area burst yesterday morning, disrupting service to the region.
Most residents and businesses would have noticed a loss of water pressure that continued for much of the day in isolated areas, said Water Department spokeswoman Kymm Solchaga. Crews diverted water from the Koloa system to keep water flowing.
The pipe was repaired by mid-afternoon, but pressure problems were expected to continue for some customers until the storage tank for the area was filled, she said.
Building expo set on Kaua'i
LIHU'E, Kaua'i The Contractors Association of Kaua'i and First Hawaiian Bank will stage the 12th annual Kaua'i Building and Remodeling Expo from 2:30 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kaua'i Veterans Center.
The free construction fair will feature furniture, plumbing, landscaping, roofing, building materials and other displays, as well as seminars on a range of topics. For more information call the association at (808) 246-2662.

Want to get rid of that broken toaster or old refrigerator and do a good deed at the same time? Instead of dumping them, haul those unwanted metal products to the Aloha Aina Earth Day Celebration from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Wai'anae Boat Harbor.
Sponsor Nani 'O Wai'anae, a nonprofit organization, is raising money by collecting scrap metal in any form. No fluids of any kind can be accepted.
