Big Island student earns third state title

Kimberly Reinhold, a junior at St. Joseph Junior & Senior High School in Hilo, has won her third top prize in the Hawai'i State Science and Engineering Fair.

Reinhold won for senior research for "Artificial Visual Perception: An Integrated Approach to Neuroadaptive Modeling," a project that expanded on her project from last year.

Second-place senior research winner Kiana Frank, of Kamehameha High School, will join Reinhold at the International Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held in Portland, Ore., next month. Also there will be team project winners Sharon Lum and Leanne Ta, of McKinley High School, and the district science fair winners and winners of the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools science fair.

The following students were the best of 384 participants in the state science fair held at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall last week:

• Senior Research: First, Kimberly E. Reinhold, St. Joseph School; second, Kiana L. Frank, Kamehameha High School; third, Amanda M. Garcia, Kamehameha High School. Honorable Mention: Andrew K. Knutson, Kamehameha High School; Kaitlin M. Luther and Alana M. Yurkanin, Baldwin High School (Team); Lena K. Nahale, Kamehameha High School.

• Junior Research: First, Philip Mocz, Mililani Middle School; second, Joseph J.W. Fala, Iolani School; third, Keala Martins-Keli'iho'omalu, Kamehameha School, Hawaii Campus. Honorable Mention: Samuel M. Greene, Iolani School; Mary V. Beech, St. Andrew's Priory; Andy Sagucio, Holy Trinity School.

• Junior Display: First, Benjamin Cole and Miku Konsolas, Our Redeemer Lutheran Elementary (Team); second, Eli David Hart, Kealakehe Intermediate; third, Mirabel Y. Koike, Iolani School. Honorable Mention: Blake R. Tolentino, St. John Vianney School; Emily Shimkus and Kana Mathis, Our Redeemer Lutheran Elementary (Team); Scott S. Sakaida, Iolani School.

Others competing in Portland:

• Maui District Science Fair winner: Alana Yurkanin, Kaitlin Luther (Baldwin/team project).

• Leeward District Science Fair winners: Chelsey Villanueva (Kapolei), Megan A.G. Soriano (Waipahu),

• Windward District Science Fair winners: Jenna Dionisio (Kalaheo)

• Hawaii Association of Independent Schools winners: Vaseem Anwar, Kevin Luu (Maryknoll/team project); Kawakahi Amina (Kamehameha); Amanda Garcia (Kamehameha).

Cynthia Hewitt of Trinity Christian School and Jeffrey Giacobetti of the Kahuku complex were named Science Teachers of the Year.
