The Banff Mountain Film Festival, tonight at the Blaisdell Center, offers eight movies on the excitement of the extreme outdoors, from paragliding in the Himalayas to the climbing adventures of Biscuit the dog, from whitewater and ocean paddling to snowboarding.

The films explore many points of the globe, including Iceland, Norway, Mexico, Nepal, Bhutan, Montserrat, China, Siberia, Italy, Pakistan, Croatia, Switzerland, Canada and the United States. They also look at cultural and environmental issues.

Among the films:

  • "Front Range Freaks: Biscuit" profiles a little dog with a big appetite for rock climbing.
  • "Wehyakin" is about the adventures of international paddlers in Iceland, Norway and Mexico.
  • "Part Animal, Part Machine" focuses on an ice climber who still climbs after having lost both legs.
  • "French Fries to Go" spotlights the "ayatollah of canola," who drives his car around the country on used french-fry oil, promoting sustainability.

The film festival, which also offers door prizes, is a benefit for the Hawai'i Nature Center.
