Kailua football coach denies wrongdoing Advertiser Staff Kailua High School football coach Darren Johnson yesterday maintained his innocence in response to recent allegations made by assistant coaches, but would not comment further regarding the school's investigation into their complaints.
Johnson, the Surfriders' head coach the past eight seasons, said he is "not supposed to talk about" the allegations or investigation and deferred comment to Kailua athletic director Mel Imai, who could not be reached yesterday.
Attempts to reach a Kailua assistant coach also were unsuccessful.
On Tuesday, several assistants complained to Imai about misconduct by Johnson, who has compiled a 58-29-1 record and guided the Surfriders to the past three O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship games.
Imai said several of the assistants tendered their resignations, but he asked them to reconsider should the problems be resolved. Imai would not disclose the complaints, but said they were "mostly football coaching-related."
He acknowledged "there were other concerns, too."
Imai said Wednesday night that the Kailua administration had hoped to settle the matter by tomorrow.
