Shin Buddhism topic of talk

The Buddhist Study Center's 3rd Annual Kanmo Imamura Lecture Series will be on "Shin Buddhism: Retrospect and Prospect."

Alfred Bloom, professor emeritus of the University of Hawai'i's religion department, will talk on the topic at 7 p.m. April 30 and 9 a.m. May 1 at the Buddhist Study Center, 1436 University Ave. Admission is free.

Bloom, who concentrated on Buddhist studies at Harvard University after completing a Christian theological education, received a Fulbright Scholarship in the late 1950s, and was able to pursue research in Japan focused on the life and teaching of Shinran Shonin.

In 1993, he was the Numata professor at Harvard Divinity School. He was appointed Kaikyoshi, a Buddhist priest, in 1997.

UH professor in presentation

Les Sponsel, a professor of anthropology at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, will present a program on "Sacred Places: A Worldwide Photographic Pilgrimage" at 7 p.m. Thursday at Eiben Hall of the Ching Conference Center, second floor, on the Chaminade University campus.

Panelists-respondents include the Rev. Al Bloom and former Lt. Gov. Jean King. The facilitator is Dr. Poranee Natadecha-Sponsel.

New center for meditation

The Kailua Shambhala Meditation Group will open May 2 at its new center, on the second floor of Aikahi Shopping Center. There will be a blessing at 9 a.m. and free introductory talk at 11:30 a.m.

Free screening of Heston film

The 1993 film, "Charlton Heston Presents the Bible: The Passion," will be screened for free at 7 p.m. April 26 in the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Medical Plaza and Wellness Center at Castle Medical Center. A panel discussion on the passion story will follow.

Retired bishop in commentary

The 2002 film, "Voices from The Holy Land," directed by a former Hawai'i resident, the Rev. Brian Grieves, will be screened at 7:30 p.m. April 24 at St. Andrew's Cathedral's Tenney Theatre.

Commentary and reflections by retired Episcopal Bishop of Wyoming Bob Jones and his wife, Mary Page Jones, will follow. Elected bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming in 1977, Jones was also dean of St. George's College in Jerusalem in 1996 and serves as interim rector of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church on North King Street.

Daylong retreat in Kane'ohe

"Awakening the Divine Feminine," a daylong retreat, will be at 10 a.m. May 8 at the Paewalani Retreat Center in Kane'ohe.

Guest speaker at Chaminade

Frederic William Bush, a D. Wilson Moore professor emeritus of ancient Near Eastern studies from Fuller Theological Seminary, will be the guest speaker for The Friends of Sabeel at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Crossroads and at 2 p.m. Thursday at Henry Hall 109 (The Little Theatre) on the Chaminade University campus.

An expert in the Semitic languages, including Hebrew and Arabic, Bush has worked on many biblical translation projects. He'll talk on Holy Land history and current happenings in the area. Admission is free.
