Darnell threw six touchdown passes and ran for two more, and younger brother Anthony had a game-clinching interception return for a score in the arenafootball2 game before 4,103.
While Darnell did most of the scoring, Anthony's interception was the biggest play of the game.
He stepped in front of a Sherard Poteete pass in the left flat and returned it 20 yards into the end zone for a 63-52 Islanders' lead with 22 seconds remaining.
"(Poteete) was throwing that little backside route all game on me and I was waiting for the perfect time," Anthony said. "I just happened to get a good break on it, perfect timing."
Bossier-Shreveport added a scoring pass with 3.7 seconds remaining and a two-point conversion pass, but the Islanders' Robert Kemfort recovered Jason Ball's on-side kick to seal the win.
Darnell threw two touchdown passes to both Nian Taylor and Mike Miller. Anthony Arceneaux and Kemfort also caught scoring passes.
The Battle Wings' largest lead was 37-28 with 8:48 remaining in the third quarter, and the Islanders' largest lead was 49-37 with 10:35 left in the fourth.
There were seven lead changes and one tie in the game.
"This arena game you have to stick in there, hang in there," Islanders head coach Cal Lee said. "We're up,
we were down, we were up, we were down, and we finally came out on top. There's a lot of scoring involved and you can't give up."
When the Islanders seemed down, Darnell took charge with his legs.
His first rushing touchdown a 6-yard sweep to the right cut the Islanders' deficit to 37-35 with 3:07 remaining in the third quarter.
After a long missed field-goal attempt by Ball, the Islanders' Eddie Klaneski took the ball off the net and returned the ball to the Battle Wings' 4. Darnell scored on a 2-yard run for a 42-37 lead on the final play of the third quarter.
"We got down there and we just had to be safe and score points, not get ahead of ourselves and I got my number called," Darnell said.
Bossier-Shreveport took its final lead at 52-49 with 4:38 remaining on a 15-yard pass from Poteete to Bo Smith.
Darnell's 12-yard pass to Miller put the Islanders up 56-52 with 2:09 remaining.
On the ensuing kickoff, Shadrick McAfee had an apparent kickoff return for a touchdown, but it was called back by an illegal block penalty on Kevin Thomas.
"It's difficult to say, I wasn't watching it," Bossier-Shreveport head coach Keith Barefield said. "That's something you have to look at film on. The best I can do is assume the official on the side saw what happened and made the right call. I hope so."
The Battle Wings started at their 18, and after an incomplete pass and a rush for no gain, Anthony intercepted Poteete.
The Islanders took a 28-17 lead with 1:36 remaining before halftime on a 9-yard crossing pass from Darnell Arceneaux to Taylor in the back left corner of the end zone.
The Battle Wings came back before halftime by exposing the Islanders' suspect special teams.
Bossier-Shreveport's Ball missed a 31-yard field-goal attempt wide right with under 25 seconds remaining before halftime, but the Islanders' Joshua Robinson couldn't catch a high hop near the goal line and the Battle Wings' McAfee fell on the ball in the end zone. Balls off the net are still in play.
The Islanders took over at their 5 with 16.2 seconds left after a touchback. After a short completion and an incompletion, Kimo Naehu missed a 47-yard field-goal attempt wide right. McAfee took the ball off the net and weaved his way into the end zone on the final play of the half to put Bossier-Shreveport up 30-28.
Darnell completed 16 of 27 passes for 221 yards. Poteete was 21 of 35 for 237 yards.
The Islanders improved to 2-1, while the Battle Wings dropped to 1-2.
The Islanders will host the Bakersfield Blitz next Saturday, and Darnell made a bold prediction for the rest of the home season.
"We'll be undefeated at home the whole season," he said. "... I feel pretty good about this."
