HPU rallies by UHH to earn softball split

Hawai'i Pacific scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Hawai'i-Hilo, 10-9, yesterday in the second game to earn a split of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at HPU Windward Field.

Hawai'i-Hilo scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Hawai'i Pacific, 2-0, in the first game.

HPU is 17-16 overall and 8-10 in the Pac West. Hilo is 23-15 and 9-3.

Jennifer Baron hit a three-run homer to right in the sixth to rally HPU, which trailed 9-5.

Tiari Keliinoi was 5 for 6 in the doubleheader, including a double in each game.



BASEBALL

• HPU splits doubleheader: Geoffrey Say batted 3 for 3 and Kyle Stanley had three hits, including a two-run double and four RBIs, to lead Hawai'i Pacific to a 4-3 victory over Chico State last night in the first game of a doubleheader at Aloha Stadium.

Chico State won the second game, 4-3.

HPU is 23-23. Chico State is 29-15-1.



WATER POLO

• Hawai'i splits: Beth Novick recorded two hat tricks as the University of Hawai'i split opening-day matches at The Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine lost to host Long Beach State, 10-5, and beat Arizona State, 6-4.

UH's Shannon Carroll also scored three goals in the victory over the Sun Devils.

The Rainbow Wahine (11-12 overall, 4-7 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) play Pacific and UC San Diego today in the tournament's final day.



SOCCER

• Ching scores: Hale'iwa's Brian Ching scored his first goal of the Major League Soccer season in San Jose's 3-1 victory over host New England yesterday.

Ching scored the game's final goal in the 75th minute off an assist from Landon Donovan.

The Earthquakes are 1-1-1.



HONORS

• Frazier at Penn Relays: University of Hawai'i athletic director Herman Frazier was named "honorable carnival referee" for the Penn Relays Carnival, according to the event's Web site.

The Penn Relays, which bills itself as, "the oldest and largest relay carnival in the world," will celebrate its 110th running April 22-24 in Philadelphia.

Frazier, a Philadelphia native, competed in the meet as a high school and college athlete and an Olympic medalist.



MEETING

• Quarterback Club: The Kamehameha Schools principal Tony Ramos and athletic directors Blane Gaison and Erv Kau are the scheduled speakers for tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The club's luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and its meeting is at noon at Pagoda Ballroom.
