Free Waikiki tours to resume

The Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association will again offer its free guided walking tours of historic Waikiki beginning in May.

The Queen's Tour of the Waikiki Historic Trail ended in July when money ran out.

A $20,000 grant from Kamehameha Schools, which matched money from the Hawai'i Nature Center and the Hawai'i Tourism Authority/Mayor's Office of Economic Development, have guaranteed that the tours can run through the end of the year, said Dorien McClellan, association program director.

The tours were started by historian George Kanahele, who died in 2000. Six days a week, a Native Hawaiian historian would take as many as 25 people along a route that stopped at 23 significant sites, including the residence of Queen Lili'uokalani and a camp of Kamehameha I.

Some tours are already being given, but regular tours will begin May 27 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, starting at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center's fountain courtyard. For information, call 737-6442.
