UH students win design award

Two doctoral architecture students at the University of Hawai'i took second place in the Annual International Student Design Competition.

Arnulfo J. Castillo and Heidi Newton, both third-year doctoral candidates in the UH-Manoa School of Architecture, participated in the metal-in-construction design competition to create a Skate Park/Community Center in an historical park in a Chicago neighborhood.

The competition is sponsored by the Metal Construction Association. The students won $1,000, the School of Architecture $500 and the faculty sponsor, associate professor Fabrizio Medosi, $250.


High schoolers' writing honored

Three students from Hawai'i high schools were awarded top honors in the statewide 16th Annual Hawai'i High School Writing Awards sponsored by Hawai'i Pacific University.

Patricia Ann Ward from Sacred Hearts Academy took first-place honors for her essay, "Mom and Pop Stores Maintain Hawaiian Heritage." Ward received a cash award and an HPU tuition waiver valued at more than $8,000.

Sheela Jane Menlon, also from Sacred Hearts Academy, won second place for "A Balancing Act." She received a cash award and an HPU tuition waiver valued at more than $5,000.

The third-place award went to Jourdene Rosella Cruz-Aguon from James Campbell High School for her work titled, "Volcanoes, Economic?" She received a cash award and an HPU tuition waiver valued at nearly $3,000.


ASSETS head elected trustee

Lou Salza, head of ASSETS School, has been elected to the National Association of Independent Schools Board of Trustees. Salza will serve a three-year term on the 18-member board.

As head of a school that specializes in teaching dyslexic and gifted students, Salza said, "I'm excited to be able to bring to the NAIS board my experience here at ASSETS, a school that excels at educating students who learn differently," Salza said.


Group names new chancellor

John Rodney has been named chancellor commander of the Knights of Pythias, an international, charitable, nonprofit fraternal organization.

Other officers are vice chancellor Stephen Gelson, prelate Abraham Nahale'a, master of work Henry Pikini, secretary Cletus Ching, financial secretary Willis Ward, treasurer William Lau, master at arms Benjamin Sanchez, inner guard William Holsomback and outer guard Rudolph McIntyre.
