McLachlin captures Hooters golf event

Punahou School and UCLA alum Parker McLachlin shot a final-round 5-under 66 yesterday to win a Hooters Pro Golf Tour event by two strokes at Seneca, S.C.

McLachlin finished with a four-round total of 13-under 271 to finish ahead of Michael Letzig at Cross Creek Plantation Course.

McLachlin won $24,000.


SOFTBALL

• UH swept at Tulsa: The University of Hawai'i softball team was swept by Tulsa in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader yesterday in Tulsa, Okla.

In the first game, Maren Genow pitched a seven-hitter as the Golden Hurricane beat the Rainbows, 2-1. In the second game, Tulsa beat Hawai'i, 6-2.

Hawai'i is 23-24 and 5-5. Tulsa is 36-15 and 9-3.

• HPU, Chaminade split: Chaminade and Hawai'i Pacific split a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday at HPU Windward Field.

Donnell Wittekind pitched a four-hitter as Chaminade took the opener, 1-0. Mallory Anderson pitched a one-hitter as HPU won the second game, 6-0.

HPU is 11-30 and 9-11. Chaminade is 18-17 and 7-13.


BASEBALL

• HPU swept: Chico State (Calif.) swept a doubleheader from Hawai'i Pacific yesterday at Aloha Stadium.

In the first game, the Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the seventh to beat HPU, 4-3.

In the second game, Mike Jones pitched a six-hitter as Chico State won, 9-2.

Chico State is 31-15-1. HPU is 23-25.


PADDLING

• Colin, Spalding qualify: Kailua's Kathy Colin, Lauren Spalding of Kula, Maui, and their two partners qualified for the Olympic Continental Qualifier for the Americas to be held April 29 at Curitiba, Brazil.

Colin, Spalding, Miami's Marie Mijalis and San Diego's Carrie Johnson qualified yesterday for the K-4 event with a time of 1:41.67 at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at Oakland's Lake Merritt.


WATER POLO

• UH women split on road: The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team split a pair of matches at the Beach Invitational yesterday at Long Beach, Calif.

The No. 6 Rainbows beat Pacific in their first match, 11-5, then lost to No. 19 UC San Diego, 9-7.
