QUICK BITES
Chefs will face off at Maui food festival

By Wanda A. Adams

If you're headed for Maui this weekend, a must stop is the 12th annual Ulupalakua Thing 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of Tedeschi Vineyards on Haleakala Highway.

This year, the Chefs Challenge involves (left to right, pictured) Mark Ellman of Maui Tacos and Penne Pasta (emcee), James McDonald of I'o and Pacific'O, Eric Arbogast of Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bari, Scott McGill of Hula Grill and (not pictured) Adam Condon of Spago. The chefs will use a "surprise shopping bag" to create new dishes on the spot in two heats (at 12:15 p.m. and 2 p.m.).

The focus of this annual free-form festival is all things agricultural. Proceeds benefit Maui Community College's agriculture and culinary school and 4-H programs around Maui. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate (no charge for children 10 and younger). Information: (888) 808-1036 or www.ulupalakuathing.com.

Culinary schools are showcasing their style

The culinary schools are busy.

Culinary students at Kapi'olani Community College are staging a food-and-wine-pairing dinner from 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Ka 'Ikena dining room on campus. The theme is Napa Valley, and you get five courses for $100, served with wines from Fujioka's. This fund-raiser will help send students on culinary tours of Thailand and Europe.

Randal Nunokawa of Hawai'i Community College wrote to show off the catalog of culinary continuing-education classes there. If you'll be in Hilo in May, June or July, check out the offerings — including some chef-led farm tours. See www.hawcc.hawaii.edu/ocet.

And don't forget Leeward Community College's Taste of the Stars April 30 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village featuring Alan Wong, D.K. Kodama, Douglas Lum, Hiroshi Fukui, Eric Leterc, Wayne Hirabayashi, Russell Siu and others. This is the first time the event will be off campus, but it's for an exciting reason — they're building a new kitchen. Reservations: 455-0392.
