Iolani wins 12th math title in row
Iolani School has won its 12th consecutive O'ahu Math League Championship, yielding only three of the top 10 scores to other schools.
Iolani was followed in Division A by Kamehameha Schools, Punahou School, Moanalua High and McKinley High.
Hanalani Schools led Division B, followed by Sacred Hearts Academy, Castle High, Molokai High and St. Andrews Priory.
Iolani also won the junior varsity division, followed by McKinley, Kamehameha, Punahou and Hanalani.
Mililani High was the most improved school.
The top 10 scorers were: Derek Goto (Iolani); second (tie), Matthew Ardo (Iolani) and Carol Pham (Iolani); fourth, Jackie Chan (McKinley); fifth, Ryan Lau (Iolani); sixth, Kelly Nakamura (Iolani); seventh, Bryce Lee (Iolani); eighth, Nick Seitz (Kamehameha); ninth, Ina Tang (Iolani); 10th, Jason Foley (Kamehameha).
Gear Up Scholars awards available
Eighth-graders at 32 schools across the state are invited to apply to be Gear Up Scholars.
The program provides college resources and programs throughout the students' high school years and offers a need-based scholarship for those who meet academic and financial criteria at the end of their senior year.
To qualify, students must complete the eighth-grade at any Title l middle school targeted for Gear Up services; have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above for the seventh and eighth grades; have no Class A or B criminal offenses; sign a pledge form stating their intention to go to college and expect to graduate in 2008.

Sales to benefit Kailua High event
Kailua High parents will sell snacks and cookbooks over the next two weekends to raise money for Project Graduation 2004.
The cookbooks and Crunchsation snacks will be available at Hardware Hawaii Ace from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday for the next two weekends.
The money will be used to provide a non-alcoholic, drug-free event for seniors after their graduation ceremony.
Student poets to recite at mall
Student poets will read their work at Kahala Mall from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday as part of the Star Poets 2004 Reading/ Awards Ceremony.
The contest was sponsored by Windward Community College and Starbucks coffee to encourage a new generation of writers in grades 3 to 12.
Starbucks will present prizes totaling nearly $1,500 to 30 winners and 37 honorable mentions, plus an additional $5,500 to the students' schools to support literacy programs.
Author Lois-Ann Yamanaka and Star Poet in the Schools teacher-writer Susan Lee St. John will provide introductions.
WCC will use part of a $10,000 grant from Starbucks to produce a teachers' resource guide of poetry lessons to be distributed this fall.
The winners were chosen from 2,800 entries statewide.
Copies of the first-, second- and third-place poems in each grade will be available in the Star Poets Journal 2004 at the ceremony and at all Starbucks in Hawai'i. All winners and honorable mentions will be posted at www.wcc.hawaii.edu.
