YWCA of O'ahu honors four teens
The YWCA of O'ahu recognized four teens for extraordinary achievement at its Young Leader Luncheon.
Theresa Tanner of Sacred Hearts Academy was the overall winner of a $1,500 scholarship. Tanner, who grew up in an orphanage in China and is missing her left hand, came to the U.S. at age 12 after being adopted. She has given more than 600 hours of community service and has a 3.5 grade average.
Recipients of $500 scholarships were Amanda Caravalho of Sacred Hearts Academy, Ann Shopper of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa and Kristen Brown of Kalani High School.
Young artists win contest
Hawai'i students received awards from the state Department of Transportation for entries to DOT's 2004 International Aviation Art Contest. The theme of this year's contest was "Flying Saves Lives."
- Age 6-9: First place, Sydney Garguilo, Shafter Elementary; second, Justin Grizzle, Shafter Elementary; third, Chelsie Toyomura, Waiakeawaena School.
- Age 10-13: First place, Mariepaz Redona, Kalakaua Middle; second, Alden Godoy, Kalakaua Middle; third, Kristen Simon, Kalakaua Middle.
- Age 14-17: First place, Thomas Y. Tamangided, Hilo High; second, Jason Fung, Honolulu Waldorf High; third, Paul Caitano, Hilo High.
Kalani High wins mock trial title
Kalani High School's mock trial team won the Hawai'i High School State Mock Trial Championship, the school's first such title.
The tournament is designed to encourage and engage students in the examination of critical issues of law and develop their advocacy and communications skills. It was sponsored by the Hawai'i Friends of Civic and Law-Related Education and the Judiciary History Center through financing from the Hawai'i State Bar Association.
