7-foot UH recruit still undecided

Advertiser Staff

Chris Botez, a 7-foot center being recruited by the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team, remained undecided last night.

Botez, a sophomore at Chemeketa Community College (Ore.), has narrowed his choices to Hawai'i and Boise State.

"We're still talking it over," said Botez's father, Val. "It's a big decision, so we're comparing everything we can."

Val Botez said he expects his son to make a decision by this weekend.

Chaminade signs Hirata: Iolani School senior Ryan Hirata, one of the state's top long-distance shooters, signed a national letter of intent yesterday to play for Chaminade University next season.

Hirata, a 5-foot-8 guard, averaged 11.2 points per game and led the Raiders in 3-point goals with 31 in 17 games. Many of those 3-point goals were from between 23 and 28 feet.

Hirata started as a freshman on Maryknoll's varsity before transferring to Iolani and helping the Raiders win two state titles.
