Yoshimoto spurs Riders past Raiders
Advertiser Staff
Nicole Yoshimoto scored 17 of her game-high 22 points in the second half last night to lead the Roosevelt High School girls basketball team to a 57-48 upset of previously unbeaten Kahuku.
The visiting Red Raiders fell to 7-1 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division, while the Rough Riders improved to 7-2.
Roosevelt outscored Kahuku 16-2 in the third period after trailing 30-23 at halftime.
"We switched up our defense and tried to corral Latoya (Wily)," Rough Riders coach Bobby Keanini said, referring to the Red Raiders' dominant center. "We made it hard for her to score and pass the ball."
Wily, a 6-foot senior, finished with 16 points, and Mona Ale and Karla Tailele each added 11 points for the Red Raiders.
Keanini said his team played a zone defense and sophomore Shannon Miyashiro (six rebounds, three blocks) helped contain Wily.
Yoshimoto, a 5-5 junior guard, scored 12 points in the fourth period. Tati Beasley, a 5-7 sophomore forward, contributed 14 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals, six assists and three blocks for Roosevelt.
"Tonight our shots were falling and we rebounded well in the second half," Keanini said. "We played a scrappy game and we came up with a lot of loose balls. Everybody contributed, so with all that and Kahuku not having one of their greatest nights, it all worked out well for us."
