Kalihi fire may have been a hate crime

Police are investigating the Wednesday burning of a vehicle in a Kalihi parking garage at 420 Waiakamilo Road as a possible anti-gay hate crime, said Department of Human Services Director Lillian Koller.

The vehicle is owned by a Child Welfare Service employee.

Police Lt. David Kamai confirmed today that hate is one of the motives being looked at.

A flammable liquid was poured onto the roof of the vehicle, police said. The fire destroyed two other vehicles parked nearby, one of them owned by an Adult Protective Service employee and another a tenant of the building where the fire took place.

Three additional vehicles received minor damage.

The fire caused $24,000 damage to the vehicles and $10,000 damage to the structure.

Four people hurt by speeding stolen car

Four people were injured yesterday in collisions that involved seven vehicles and were triggered by a speeding stolen car that ran a stop sign at Bernice Street and Kapalama Avenue.

Two men, 34 and 39, and a 19-year-old woman who were in the stolen 2001 Ford Mustang were taken to The Queen’s Medical Center.

The woman, who was a passenger, suffered critical injuries but her condition today was listed as fair. The two men, including the 34-year-old driver, were listed today in fair condition.

A Kalihi man, 31, whose Chevy van was the second vehicle struck by the stolen Mustang, also was taken to Queen’s in fair condition, police said.

The incident, which was witnessed by an off-duty police officer, was reported at 12:09 p.m. Police said it started with the Mustang sideswiping a 2004 Dodge sedan. The Mustang then veered into the Chevy van, forcing the van into a parked 2004 Mazda. The Mustang continued onto a driveway and struck a parked car. The impact forced the car into a Chevy El Camino parked next to it.

The driver of the Mustang is suspected of auto theft and negligently causing injury, police said.
