$100.2M OK'd for UH projects

The state Legislature has approved and sent to Gov. Linda Lingle 18 capital improvement projects totaling $100.2 million for the 10 campuses of the University of Hawai'i system, including $15 million for Phase 1 of a Student Life Center at UH-Hilo.
The capital improvement projects passed out of conference committees as part of the supplemental budget quadruple those sought by Lingle, who weighed university requests and asked legislators for a total of four UH projects totaling $25 million at the start of the session.
The items are still subject to the governor's approval or veto, as UH capital improvement director Jan Yokota told UH regents in a recent briefing.
Highlights of the legislative initiatives include:
$25 million for capital renewal and deferred maintenance.
$649,000 for fire safety code compliance systemwide.
$380,000 for health safety code requirements systemwide.
$1.43 million for infrastructure improvements systemwide.
$15 million for Phase 1 of Student Life and Events complex, UH-Hilo.
$3.5 million for Student Services Building renovation, Maui Community College.
$10 million for One Stop Center Building, Kaua'i Community College.
$18.4 million in federal money included for a College of Pharmacy Building, UH-Hilo.
$120,000 for UH-Manoa Makai Athletic Training Room renovation and expansion.
$14.5 million for Komohana Agricultural Complex at UH-Manoa.
$1.1 million for a new office building for the UH-Manoa Cooperative Extension Programs on Moloka'i.
$3.7 million for North Hawai'i Research and Education Center, Phase II, UH-Hilo.
$441,000 for temporary buildings at UH-West O'ahu.
$3 million for Cannon Club site development at Kapi'olani Community College.
$1.67 million for Food Services Program, Phase II, at Leeward Community College.
$300,000 for a Science Building at Maui Community College.
$350,000 for air-conditioning plant renovations at Kaua'i Community College.
$700,000 for a second access road at Kaua'i Community College, with $500,000 from general obligation bonds.
