Hawai'i, Nevada split softball doubleheader

The University of Hawai'i split a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with Nevada yesterday at Idlewild Park in Reno.
Melissa Coogan (9-14) pitched the seven-inning distance, allowing three runs on seven hits, and Tyleen Tausaga's two-run homer and Amanda Garza's two-run triple sparked a six-run seventh as the Rainbow Wahine won the first game, 9-3.
The Wolf Pack then tagged Shannon Tabion (14-9) for three runs on four hits in 2á innings to win the second game, 3-1.
Hawai'i is 24-27 overall and 6-8 in WAC. Nevada is 30-24 and 5-7.
The two teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. Hawai'i time.
MORE SOFTBALL
HPU sweeps defending champs: The Hawai'i Pacific University softball team took two games from UC Davis yesterday at the Sea Warriors' Hawai'i Loa Field in Kane'ohe. HPU's Jessica Parra scattered four hits in a 1-0 victory against the defending national champions in the first game.
The Sea Warriors rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to win the second game, 5-3.
HPU (20-17) and UC Davis (22-22) conclude the series with a doubleheader tomorrow at the Lady Sea Warrior softball field starting at noon.
Hilo swept by Toros: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo softball team lost a pair of games yesterday to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 5-2 and 1-0, at the UHH Softball Field. The Toros improved to 29-19-2. The Vulcans fell to 25-172.
SURFING
Ballard tops world rankings: Kaua'i's Rochelle Ballard finished second in the Roxy Pro yesterday at Cloudbreak, Fiji, but moved into first place on the overall World Championship Tour ratings. The final day of the three-day contest was completed in clean 4- to 5-foot waves.
Ballard won her quarterfinal and semifinal heats, then lost to Peru's Sofia Mulanovich in the final. Mulanovich scored a perfect 10 in the final and defeated Ballard, 17.75-15.5.
Mulanovich received $10,600; Ballard received $6,600.
Through two of nine events on the 2004 women's world tour, Ballard has 1,944 points. Jacqueline Silva is No. 2 with 1,752.
Ballard has finished second in both contests this year.
"It feels weird to be in the first two finals in a row and not win, but it's actually making me hungrier," Ballard said.
