Police seek 3 men in beating death

Honolulu Police and CrimeStoppers are asking for help finding three men who may have been involved in the Monday beating death of a 26-year-old man near a Kona Street nightclub. Mikiala Kahalewai was punched and kicked by at least four men near the Pachinko Karaoke nightclub, police say.

Ulutunu Faumuina Jr., 23, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder in the case.

Police believe three other men also beat Kahalewai. They were described as large men, all about 6 feet tall and more than 300 pounds. Call Detective Kathleen Osmond at 529-3080, or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.



Mother of man shot by police sues

The mother of a 28-year-old man who was shot and killed by police in an 'Aiea garage in April 2002 has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and unnamed police officers, claiming police used unnecessary deadly force .

The lawsuit, filed Thursday by Honolulu attorney Myles Breiner on behalf of Louella Cazimero-Bactad, claims police were negligent in their use of excessive force.

On April 23, 2002, Clinton Candelario led police on a chase through Pearl City and Salt Lake before he was found in a garage on Kauhale Street, police said. Candelario was allegedly trying to steal another car when two officers shot him at close range, police said.

Puna man dies from crash injuries

HILO, Hawai'i — A 22-year-old Puna man died yesterday of injuries suffered in a crash Thursday on a private road in the Orchid Land Estates subdivision in Lower Puna.

Noel Marley of Hawaiian Beaches was riding in a dune buggy operated by 28-year-old Shawn Carter of Hilo shortly before 4:20 p.m. Thursday on 40th Avenue near Orchid Land Drive when the vehicle overturned and landed on top of Marley.

He died at Hilo Medical Center at 5:16 a.m. yesterday.

Man stabbed in fight on Young St.

A 41-year-old man was in serious condition yesterday after he was stabbed during a fight at Young and Ke'eaumoku streets.

Police have arrested a 36-year-old man. Police said the two men got into a fight at about 3:30 p.m. yesterday. The victim was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.



Man hit by police car was intoxicated

HILO, Hawai'i — A 33-year-old pedestrian who was struck and killed by a police car in Kona earlier this year was intoxicated and also had anti-convulsion medication in his system, police said yesterday.

Gregory Pluta was standing on Ali'i Drive at about 1:27 a.m. Feb. 17 when he was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by officer Bryan Ellis.

The Hawai'i County Police Department said toxicology tests revealed Pluta had a 0.113 percent blood-alcohol content. Motorists are considered intoxicated if they have a blood-alcohol content of .08 percent or higher.

Traffic and internal administrative investigations are being conducted in the case.
