Waikiki hotel to celebrate art season

Hilton Hawaiian Village will celebrate Hawai'i Arts Season Friday through May 2 with free public performances, including poetry readings and story-telling, ballet and modern dance, and jazz and classical music, as well as an art fair with more than 40 local artisans selling their works.

The art fair will run throughout the celebration on theresort's Lagoon Green and will feature artisans from the Pacific Handcrafters Guild, whose wares range from original paintings and sculptures to carvings and Hawaiian crafts.

In addition to year-round activities and attractions like the Bishop Museum Collection at the Hawai'i Arts and Cultural Center in Kalia Tower, the Friday evening King's Jubilee music and dance celebration, and cultural activities like lei-making and hula lessons, visitors can also take a self-guided tour of the Village's extensive art collection, which includes original works by artists such as Roy Tabora and Hiroshi Tagami.

Cultural performances are scheduled throughout the weekend at the Shell Bar, Tapa Bar and Village Green.

Performances include Honolulu Theater for Youth storytelling (noon Friday and May 2 at the Shell Bar stage), Galliard String Quartet (noon Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Tapa Bar), Hawai'i Opera Theater vocalists (2 p.m. Friday and May 2 at the Tapa Bar), X-Music featuring Steve Rosenthall (4 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. May 2 at the Village Green), Ballet Hawai'i (4 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. May 2 at the Village Green), Hawai'i Slam Team (1 p.m. Friday and noon May 2 at the Tapa Bar stage), storytelling by James McCarthy and Jeff Gere (various times and stages), and dance, storytelling, music and special effects with Arabian Nights (8 p.m. Saturday and May 2 at the Village Green).
