Stephen Downes has been named an assistant managing editor of The Advertiser, with responsibility for the newspaper's visual journalism.
His promotion is one of several recent changes in The Advertiser's senior management group, including the appointment of David Dondoneau as deputy features editor and the hiring of Steven Petranik as deputy news editor.

Announcing the assistant managing editor promotion, Managing Editor Mark Platte noted that Downes' first experience with The Advertiser was as a summer intern in 1981. He subsequently worked at the Anchorage Times and the San Diego Union before returning to The Advertiser in 1993. He has since worked as a makeup editor, graphics editor and most recently as design director.
Downes is a graduate of Damien Memorial High School and Marquette University.
As a first priority in his new position, he will guide The Advertiser through a redesign connected with the newspaper's upcoming move to a new press facility in Kapolei. He replaces David Montesino, who resigned earlier this month to join The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C.
Dondoneau, who joined The Advertiser last year as an assistant features editor, previously specialized in sports journalism.
He has worked at The News Tribune in Tacoma, Wash.; the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram; the Minot (N.D.) Daily News; and the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald. Dondoneau is a graduate of the University of North Dakota.
Petranik had worked since 1986 at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, where he has been night city editor, assistant news editor and, most recently, news editor.
Before coming to Hawai'i, he worked for news organizations including The Toronto Star, United Press International and Canadian Press. Petranik is a graduate of the University of Toronto.
