Sewage spilled in Mililani

An inadequate pump being used on a city sewer rehabilitation project in Mililani Friday night resulted in a spill of about 3,600 gallons of sewage at the intersection of Kapuahi Street and Anania Drive, the Department of Customer Services reported yesterday.

The spill was reported at 7:45 p.m. Friday, and a city crew sent to the scene stopped the spill about an hour later, a department advisory said. The crew disinfected the area and the state Department of Health was notified.

According to the advisory, the spill occurred because a private contractor working at the site tried to bypass sewage around the construction area using a pump that did not have sufficient capacity to handle incoming flows at peak times.

Kaua'i bridge to be replaced

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The county has decided to replace Olohena Bridge in Wailua Homesteads after determining the deteriorating wooden structure may not be capable of handling normal traffic.

The 35-year-old bridge will be replaced with a concrete structure 35 feet wide and 45 feet long, with a 20-ton capacity. Construction should begin in November and take about 10 months. A bid invitation for the job is expected to be issued in July.

Mayor Bryan Baptiste said the structure now has only a 7-ton capacity — less than some of the vehicles that regularly use it.

County road workers will examine the need for making safety improvements to alternate routes around the bridge in preparation for increased traffic on the roads.

Arrest made in counterfeit case

Big Island police, working with the U.S. Secret Service, arrested a 27-year-old Waimea man Friday on suspicion of passing counterfeit bills.

Weslie Malani was charged with a number of counts of forgery and theft and is being held on $4,100 bail. Police said he tried to pass five counterfeit $20 bills and one $10 bill at a South Kohala business Thursday.

Another nine $10 bills were found in Malani's possession, police said, and detectives have linked him to counterfeit bills passed at a South Kohala business earlier this month.
