A former Norwegian Cruise Line employee who was quoted in a April 18 business story said he quit the company in a pay dispute. Norwegian officials have since said, and Michael Fiesta has confirmed, that he was fired for violating a company policy.
The Advertiser regrets not having provided Fiesta's name, or the names of other employees who were quoted, to Norwegian in the course of reporting the story so the company could directly comment on their specific cases.
In addition to challenging Fiesta's account, Norwegian officials have disputed comments made by two of the six other present and former staffers who were quoted in the story. Those comments, both made by former staffers, involved pay arrangements and working conditions. The Advertiser has conducted additional interviews with both, who stand by their comments with one exception: One of the employees, Tabatha Turin, had said she shared a cabin with five other women. Norwegian records show, and Turin confirms, that four other women occupied the cabin.
The newspaper should not have used the headline "Typical workday at Norwegian" in a box describing the hours Turin said she worked. Though the schedule was discussed with Norwegian in general terms, the company was not given Turin's name and thus a chance to look into her specific descriptions of her work.
The Advertiser also did not intend to imply that Norwegian provides nothing but "unpleasant, dirty or low-paying jobs" on its ships when it characterized a trend that has seen such jobs shift abroad or to immigrants.
Finally, the newspaper should have highlighted more prominently that 10.9 percent of Norwegian's 1,400 hires for its U.S.-flag operation have resigned or chosen not to renew their contracts.
