The canoe is scheduled to depart at 9:30 p.m. that evening. The fund-raiser starts at 5:30. It will include remarks by master navigator Nainoa Thompson and others, entertainment by Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom and food provided by celebrity chefs.
Nainoa Thompson will speak at Sunday's fund-raiser.
A silent auction will include Hokule'a memorabilia, including charts, marine supplies and artifacts from previous voyages, as well as other items. Dress is aloha attire.
Hokule'a will sail first to Kaua'i, and then up the Northwestern Hawaiian Island chain, stopping at each of the islands along the way, and reporting back in satellite telephone calls to schools across the state.
Part of the mission is to let Hawai'i residents compare the unspoiled condition of the environment there with the condition of the main Hawaiian Islands, and to encourage residents to better care for their islands.
Afterward, the canoe will return to the main islands for a multi-stop statewide tour.
The fund-raising event will take place at the Honolulu Community College's Marine Education and Training Center on Sand Island, where the canoe will be moored before departure. Ticket prices vary.
