Maui educator is nurse of year
Nancy Johnson, coordinator of the Maui Community College Nursing and Health Program, has been recognized as the Hawai'i Nurses Association 2003 Nurse of the Year.
Johnson has been a professor at Maui Community College since 1983. She serves on the Native Hawaiian Health Care Systems Institutional Review Board and the Maui Memorial Medical Center Ethics Committee.
In addition to providing leadership for the MCC Nursing Program for more than 20 years, she worked with colleagues in the dental community to establish the MCC Dental Assisting program and the Maui Oral Health Center.
Teacher bound for workshop
Hawaii Baptist Academy science teacher Tina Mueller has been selected as one of 10 teachers nationally to participate in an earth science education workshop at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif., in July.
The summer workshop is designed for middle and high school teachers and will focus on plate tectonics, using real shipboard data and state-of-the-art global earth science models.
PACT member picked to board
Lowell Kalapa, a member of the board of directors for Parents and Children Together, has been elected to the board of the National Child Welfare League of America.
Kalapa, head of the Tax Foundation of Hawaii, has served on the PACT board since 1988, heading up many of its annual fund-raising events, including the 35th Anniversary Luau in 2003 and the gala "Starlight and Slippahs" benefit at La Pietra.
Fourth-grader wins drawing contest
A drawing by Samantha Dacanay, a fourth-grader at Iolani School, has been selected as grand prize winner of the Aloha Festivals Poster Contest. Her drawing depicts the 2004 festival's theme, "No Na Kamali'i" (For the Children), with symbols of Hawai'i's beauty and culture such as a sea turtle, 'ukulele, plumeria and a rainbow arching over children of diverse backgrounds.
Her drawing was on display at Pearlridge Center April 22-25. It will also be featured on Aloha Festivals children's T-shirts and note cards to be sold during the festival.
HPU recognizes top students
Two Hawai'i Pacific University students received the school's Robert E. Black Award for Excellence at HPU's 21st annual awards banquet in March.
The recipients were Virginia Holcutt, who is pursuing a bachelor of arts degree in Justice Administration, and Han Nee Chong, a Master in Communication degree candidate. Each receives a $1,000 cash award, which is given annually to an undergraduate and graduate student for community service.
Doctor named best at Queen's
Dr. Gerard K. Akaka has been named The Queen's Medical Center's Outstanding Physician of the Year.
A graduate of the Kamehameha Schools, Akaka has served as medical director of The Queen Emma Clinics at the hospital since 2002. He previously served as staff internist and medical director of the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.
