Punahou sixth-grader surfs way into history

Advertiser Staff

Carissa Moore, an 11-year-old sixth-grader at Punahou School, made surfing history by placing second in the women's division of the Body Glove Surfbout professional contest yesterday at San Clemente, Calif.

She became the youngest surfer to advance to the finals of an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) contest.

"She got through the quarters, then she won her semifinal heat, and it was hard for me to digest what was going on for a little while," said her father, Chris. "She just stepped it up and surprised everybody."

Moore, who is still an amateur, placed second to California professional Julia Christian.

Two-time defending world champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i won the men's division.
