Two arrested in campaign case

Advertiser Staff

Two executives with a Honolulu engineering firm were arrested yesterday as part of the ongoing investigation into illegal campaign contributions to Mayor Jeremy Harris.

Norman K. Nagamine, 53, and Dwight Okawa, 48, were arrested on suspicion of illegal ownership of a business and an illegal business practice known as monopolization, police said. They were released pending further investigation.

Both are on a list of donors turned over to Honolulu prosecutors in early 2002 by the state Campaign Spending Commission, said Bob Watada, executive director of the commission.

The commission believes that the men made donations with money from their company — Nagamine Okawa Engineering — to Harris through relatives and people who shared their same home address, Watada said.

Nagamine is suspected of giving $18,250 through three people, and Okawa is suspected of giving $9,750 through three people, Watada said.
