Koa furniture maker honored
Koa furniture maker Martin & MacArthur received a Kahili Award at the 13th annual Keep it Hawaii Awards for its contribution to Hawaiian products.
The category included products designed and created in Hawai'i by artists and craftspeople. Entries were judged on the authentic portrayal of Hawaiian culture, the uniqueness of the product to Hawai'i, the extent to which the product preserves the Hawaiian culture in a historical context, its educational value and how well the product enhances values in Hawai'i.
Martin & MacArthur reproduces historic furniture and builds on the work of preceding Hawaiian furniture makers through company owner Jon Martin's original line of heirloom-quality koa wood furniture.
Martin & MacArthur's commitment to reforestation also prompted CEO Lloyd Jones to work on the continued sustainable growth of koa trees.
During his term as president of the Hawaii Forestry Industry Association, Jones helped designate more than 30,000 acres of nongovernment land for growing koa.
