Iolani School announced yesterday that Eddie Maruyama will be its new co-athletic director, effective July 1.
Maruyama, 42, has been the athletic director at Radford since 1998 and was head coach for Moanalua's boys basketball team from 1989-1998. He guided the Menehunes to state championships in 1996 and 1997.
Maruyama will replace Judy Hiramoto, who is retiring in June after five years as co-athletic director with Carl Schroers.
"The first thing I want to do is thank all the people at Radford principal Robert Stevens and all the coaches and staff for letting me be a part of the Radford tradition," said Maruyama, who played basketball at Moanalua and graduated from the University of Hawai'i. "I'm going to miss working with all the coaches and people here, but I'm also looking forward to this new opportunity. It's a new challenge."
Maruyama also taught physical education at Salt Lake Elementary and Moanalua High School, where he coached basketball for a total of 18 years.
Maruyama, who said he has no direct ties to Iolani, was chosen by a five-member committee of three administrators and two teachers/coaches, headmaster Val Iwashita said. The 12 candidates included members of Iolani's staff.
"We had a lot of strong candidates and it was a difficult decision, but I think it was a good decision," Iwashita said. "Eddie brought the best combination of experience, values and principles and I think he's a good fit for the current circumstances. He has a lot of strong qualities."
Hiramoto and Schroers share responsibilities overseeing the school's boys and girls programs in 18 sports at the varsity, JV and intermediate levels. Maruyama said he has not yet been assigned the sports he will be overseeing.
Maruyama has two children, ages 9 and 4.
Memorable finale for Kapolei hurler
Kapolei senior right-hander Colin Dumlao will never forget his final high school game.
Dumlao pitched a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 14, including the first 11, in a 10-0 victory over Nanakuli on Saturday.
"This is one of the games I'll always remember," said Dumlao, who is 5 feet 7 and 150 pounds.
It also was Dumlao's only win of the season as Kapolei finished its season 4-6. Kapolei has a bye this week.
Dumlao struck out four in the first inning as the first batter struck out but reached on a passed ball. He allowed a ground out in the fourth. The final out was recorded on a line drive that he snagged.
"Honestly, I wasn't focusing on strikeouts," he said.
Dumlao was aware of a no-hitter.
"I was trying to keep it in the back of my mind ... tried to focus on hitting my spots," he said.
He said he used "a lot of fastballs, curves and occasional changeups."
He said he was getting everyone out on "curves."
"I was just happy that we won and we put a full team effort together ... I was happy I ended my season on a good note," said Dumlao, who will attend Kapi'olani Community College and study radiology.
