UH golfer Kodama honored by WAC

The University of Hawai'i's Matt Kodama was named the men's Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week for winning the Ping Golf Cougar Classic over the weekend at Provo, Utah.

Kodama won the title in a three-way playoff. The Las Vegas native earned his seventh top-10 finish and first individual title of the season with a three-round total of 206.

The senior's first individual collegiate title came in 2001 at the UH/Turtle Bay Intercolliegate.

MORE GOLF

BYUH names coach: Gregg Baker, director of instruction of golf at the Turtle Bay Resort, has been named men's and women's golf coach at Brigham Young-Hawai'i.

BYUH will begin its golf programs during the 2004-05 academic year. Turtle Bay will be the team's home course.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Leilehua 43, Campbell 38: Brittaney Stafford scored 17 points and Laree Rodrigues scored all of her 10 points in the second half, including six in the fourth quarter, as the Mules knocked off the Sabers in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association West girls basketball game last night at Leilehua.

The win moves the Mules (7-2) into a second-place tie with Pearl City. Campbell drops to 5-4.

Chaunte Jackson led Campbell with 14 points and Raynette Wahitfield added 10.

BASKETBALL

Chrisman named NABC All-Region: BYU-Hawai'i junior forward Jake Chrisman was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-West Region First Team.

Chrisman, from Provo, Utah, averaged 23.3 points per game, helping the Seasiders to a 23-6 record and into the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament.

WRESTLING

Five women from Hawai'i at Trials: Five women who went to high school in Hawai'i have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials May 21 to 23 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

The wrestlers are:

  • Clarissa Chun, 105.5 pounds, attended Roosevelt High School.
  • Kristen Fujioka, 105.5 pounds, lives in Kane'ohe, attended Castle High School.
  • Katie Kunimoto, 112.25 pounds, attended Castle High School.
  • Stephany Lee, 158.5 pounds, lives in Honolulu, attended Moanalua High School.
  • Debbi Sakai, 105.5 and 121 pounds, lives in Honolulu, attended Mililani High School.

SOFTBALL

BYUH swept: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i softball team was swept in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday by host Montana State-Billings.

Billings won 6-1 and 4-3.

Billings is 23-28 overall and 6-14 in the PacWest. BYUH is 12-19 and 4-8.
