Two arrested in campaign case
Two executives with a Honolulu engineering company have been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation into illegal campaign contributions to Mayor Jeremy Harris.
Norman K. Nagamine, 53, and Dwight Okawa, 48, were arrested Monday on suspicion of illegal ownership of a business and an illegal business practice known as monopolization, police said. They were released pending further investigation.
Both are on a list of donors turned over to Honolulu prosecutors in early 2002 by the state Campaign Spending Commission, said Bob Watada, executive director of the commission.
The commission believes that the men made donations with money from their company Nagamine Okawa Engineering to Harris through relatives and people who shared their same home address, Watada said.
Nagamine is suspected of giving $18,250 through three people, and Okawa is suspected of giving $9,750 through three people, Watada said.
Crime spree ends in arrest of four teens
Four teenage boys who are suspected of taking part in a three-hour spree of robbery and theft involving five convenience stores in Nu'uanu, Palama, Kapalama and Kalihi were arrested at 3 a.m. yesterday in Liliha.
Three of the boys are 17 and the fourth is 16. The boys allegedly stole liquor and other items from 7-Eleven stores at 1755 Nu'uanu Ave., 2404 N. School St., 1900 Dillingham Blvd. and 1136 N. King St., and a Tesoro station at 1311 Palama St., between 10 p.m. yesterday and 1 a.m. today, said Kalihi police Capt. Clayton Saito.
Physical force was used at some of the stores, said Saito, and there was an attempt to steal cash at one store, but the clerk was unable to open a safe.
The boys were also booked for criminal property damage for allegedly "trashing" one of the stores, Saito said. The boys were booked as juveniles, and charges are pending.
