ALIVE 'N' SWELL: Eddie Kamae and the Honolulu Academy of Arts have one thing in common, besides being cultural treasures: They celebrate their 77th birthday this year. And Kamae and his revamped Sons of Hawai'i Ocean Kaowili, the Rev. "Braddah Smitty" Smith and Peter "Pekelo" Cosma performed in an academy event, "Celebrating the Music of Old Hawai'i," last Sunday at the museum.
"You don't have to be Hawaiian to enjoy the music," said Braddah Smitty. "All you need is a Hawaiian heart." And the Sons now sporting blue denim shirts, instead of the palaka of yesteryear clearly have Hawaiian heart to spare. ...
Kamae and wife Myrna have evolved into keepers of the flame, capturing through words, music and film the cultural voices of past and present. The next documentary in his expansive "The Hawaiian Legacy Series," "The Legacy of Three Hawaiian Women," is expected to be completed in 2005. But first, look for "Hawaiian Son: The Life and Music of Eddie Kamae," a book due in November. ...
Uncle Mel Murata's Keiki Palaka Band, which performed before the program and at the reception that followed, are carrying on the palaka look and strumming and singing with real heart. ...

AROUND TOWN: Skip Lambert, maitre d' at Aaron's atop the Ala Moana Hotel, recounts the exploits of his late father, longtime Honolulu resident Slim Lambert, in the "American Experience" documentary "The Golden Gate," airing Monday on PBS.
The elder Lambert was the only survivor of a fall from the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco Bay during a construction accident in which 10 coworkers perished. ...
