Committee chosen to pick new UH logo

Advertiser Staff

Francis Oda, chairman and chief executive officer of Group 70 International, has been named to head a 15-person evaluation committee to oversee the selection of a new logo for the University of Hawai'i system.

The UH system now has approximately 150 images used throughout the 10 campuses.

A selection process last year ended amid an outpouring of community disapproval for two proposed logos, and both were scrapped. This new process was developed over about eight months by a Board of Regents committee.

The committee will select three professional designers or firms to create an image for UH. Candidates have until April 30 to submit their qualifications to the committee.

The committee includes:

  • Maile Andrade, assistant professor, Department of Art, UH-Manoa.
  • Scott Harada, administrative assistant, intercollegiate athletics, UH-Manoa.
  • Mark Hollender, president and CEO, Crazy Shirts.
  • Grant Kagimoto, president, Cane Haul Road Ltd.
  • Kekuhi K. Kanahele-Frias, instructor/coordinator, Native Hawaiian Community-based Education Learning Center, Hawai'i Community College.
  • Tom Klobe, professor, Department of Art, UH-Manoa, director UH Art Gallery.
  • Puni Kukahiko, graduate student, UH-Manoa.
  • Susan Lee, marketing professional, Windward Community College.
  • Robert Okuda, retired media coordinator, UH-Hilo, designer of current UH-Hilo logo.
  • Georgia Pinsky, student, Maui Community College.
  • Sandy Sanpei, associate professor, Communication Arts, Honolulu Community College.
  • Kathleen K.S.L. Thurston, UH emeritus regent, president Thurston-Pacific Inc.
  • Carol Yotsuda, founder and executive director, Garden Island Arts Council (Kaua'i).
  • Lisa Yoshihara, gallery director, Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

The three finalists will each receive $5,000 to design a logo. The committee will then choose one to take to the Board of Regents for final approval. The winning firm or designer will then be paid an additional $5,000 to complete its design.
