NORTH SHORE

14 cows killed in road accident

A cattle truck overturned on the North Shore yesterday afternoon, killing 14 cows and blocking traffic for hours.

Police said the driver of the truck lost control and turned the vehicle over on Kaukonahua Road, 1.5 miles north of Wilikina Drive in Waialua. Ninety cows were on the truck.

Kaukonahua Road was closed at 1:30 p.m. and remained closed well into the evening as police worked to clear the dead animals and investigate the case. Little information was available about the driver. One person was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital.

EAST HONOLULU

Sewer rates going up

Some East Honolulu residents will see a 3.3 percent increase on their sewer bills, effective from April 14, under a new rate approved by the state Public Utilities Commission.

Hawai'i American Water will charge single-family homeowners $50.14 a month and multi-family units will be charged $40.12 a month.

The company had sought an 18.6 percent increase. The sewer company provides service to about 10,000 customers in Hawai'i Kai and parts of Kuli'ou'ou.

HONOLULU

Budget panel approves raises

The City Council's budget committee on Tuesday approved raises of up to 9 percent for nearly 3,000 white-collar employees represented by the Hawai'i Government Employees Association.

The raises are expected to be approved by the full council May 12, but won't take effect unless the state and three other counties also approve them.

The raises would cost the city and Board of Water Supply $6.9 million next year. Mayor Jeremy Harris opposed the raises, and one council member, Charles Djou, voted against them.
