Students win debate honors

Kamehameha high school students won the Grand Championship Sweepstakes trophy at the Hawai'i Speech League's State Forensic Championships last weekend.

Individual winners who will compete at the National Forensic League Championships in Salt Lake City in June are:

  • Humorous interpretation: Diana Wan, McKinley High; Tyler Gomes, Kamehameha.
  • Dramatic interpretation: No'u Revilla, Kamehameha; Chantilly Mers, Baldwin High.
  • Duo interpretation: Kedan Frank and Joshua Masagatani, Kamehameha; and Cassandra Spencer and David Villanti, Baldwin.
  • Original oratory: Kapualani Kauhane and Troy Andrade, Kamehameha.
  • United States extemporaneous: Paul Anderson, University Lab School; Forrest Richmond, Saint Louis School.
  • International extemporaneous: Jonathan Goto, Punahou School; Pace Kaneshige, Iolani School.
  • Public forum debate: Lacey Golonka and Ken Yoshifuku, Kahuku High and Intermediate; and Ryan Alexander and Stephen Graner, Saint Louis.
  • Lincoln-Douglas debate: Lara Malins, Iolani; and Lindsey Doi, Kamehameha;
  • Varsity policy debate: Ian Tapu and Ericka Staples, and Timbre Keliiliki and Kirstin Marler, Kahuku.

Other winners: storytelling, Ryan Kanakaole, Kamehameha; program reading, Diana Wan, McKinley; impromptu speaking, Cody Hensarling, Kamehameha; novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, Joshua Wong, Iolani; junior varsity policy debate, Chau Huynh and Jodi Park, Iolani. Team sweepstakes trophies went to Kamehameha and Kahuku. McKinley, Iolani, Baldwin and Maryknoll Middle School also won team awards.
