Okada, Choy claim OIA individual golf crowns

Advertiser Staff

Wai'anae High School junior Alvin Okada made up for last year's heartbreaking finish by winning the O'ahu Interscholastic Association golf championship yesterday.

Okada shot a 1-under-par 71 at Turtle Bay Resort's Fazio Course for a two-day total of 149, two strokes better than Leilehua's Kelley Aoki and Mililani's Colin Imaoka and Bronson Kalilikane.

Okada was tied for the first-round lead last year and had a chance to make a move when eventual champion Chase Chulakote of Kailua bogeyed the final two holes. But an approach shot into the pond on the 18th hole ended Okada's title hopes and he finished second by two strokes.

Mililani won the boys team title with a four-player score of 616 for the two days. Team members are Imaoka, Kalilikane, Devin Taga, Alex Chan and Dane Serikaku.

In the girls competition, Leilehua sophomore Britney Choy won the individual championship with a 4-under 68 and a two-day score of 144, which was 11 strokes better than Roosevelt senior Xyra Suyetsugu, the 2002 OIA champ.

Roosevelt won the team title with a three-player, two-day score of 496. Team members are Suyetsugu, Nancy Shon and Natalie Nakamine.
