Warrior is last signee by UH softball

Kamehameha Schools all-state player Kate Robinson has signed a letter of intent with the University of Hawai'i. Robinson is the sixth and final player UH coach Bob Coolen plans to sign for next season.

Robinson was a utility player for the Warriors, pitching and playing first and third. She hit .500 on Kamehameha's state championship team as a sophomore. As a junior, her average was .409 and she was also 10-2, with a 0.53 earned run average. Last season she hit .341.

Robinson earned first-team all-state honors as a sophomore and senior and was second team as a junior.

The Rainbow Wahine earlier signed Valana (Aloy) Manuma from Kapolei, Kaulana Gould of Kamehameha, Louise Harriden from Australia, Janelle Rose out of San Jose City College and Kristy Yoshizawa of Sierra College.

VOLLEYBALL

U.S. women 5th: The U.S. women's national team lost to Turkey Saturday to finish fifth in the Yeltsin Cup at Ekaterinburg, Russia. The scores were 25-14, 25-14, 25-18.

McKinley High graduate Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, a former University of Hawai'i All-American, is the U.S. setter. Team USA (2-3) is without six of its regulars, who have been playing professionally overseas, including Heather Bown, another former UH All-American.

At Fukui, Japan, Honolulu's Clay Stanley had 12 kills and two blocks in Team USA's second consecutive victory over the Japanese men's national team Tuesday.

Stanley, a Kaiser High graduate who played for the University of Hawai'i, scored 22 points in a 20-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-18, 16-14 victory Sunday. The series concludes in Osaka today.

Team USA is 8-1 this year.
