Firefighters battle Sand Island blaze

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu firefighters are battling a large fire at Island Recycling off Sand Island Access Road.

The three-alarm fire was reported shortly before 5 p.m. Huge plumes of black smoke were blowing out to sea as firefighters poured water on the flames.

The state sent three fire trucks from Honolulu International Airport and the federal government sent a foam-shooting truck to help the Honolulu Fire Department, state Department of Transportation spokesman Scott Ishikawa said.

Airport operations were not affected by the smoke, Ishikawa said.
