Pedestrian seriously injured on Pali Highway

An elderly man was in serious condition today at The Queen’s Medical Center after he was hit by a car while walking across the town-bound lanes of Pali Highway near Ahi Place.

Emergency personnel were called at 11 a.m.

Witnesses said the victim, whose name and age were not available, was in a crosswalk but crossing against the light.

Work continues to phone cable lines

Verizon Hawai'i today continued its repair work on two damaged cable lines but the work site has shifted from Kapi'olani Boulevard across the McCully bridge to Ala Wai Boulevard.

Several hundred customers in Waikiki and McCully lost telephone service late Wednesday afternoon when a contractor doing road work in the area cut two cable lines. An air pressure pipe, which protects the cable lines from water, was also damaged.

Verizon spokeswoman Ann Nishida said Verizon crews were unable to pump water out of manholes in the area during the afternoon rush-hour traffic period. Spreading water compounded the cable damage.

Verizon crews discovered yesterday that not enough cable line was available to replace a 600-foot section of underground cable on McCully Street between Lime Street and the McCully bridge. Crews today shifted the work site to the Waikiki side of the bridge where extra cable line was available to make a temporary fix.

Some customers were advised yesterday that they would be without telephone service until sometime tomorrow.

A 56-year-old Hau'ula man was charged yesterday with sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl. Paul A. Keck is accused of third-degree sexual assault and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The alleged offense involving the young girl was reported to police on April 9.

Infant has burns on face, neck

Police are investigating how a 4-month-old Salt Lake girl suffered second-degree burns to her face and back.

The infant, who was brought to Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center yesterday at 9 a.m., is in stable condition, said Lisa Mann, acting lieutenant for Honolulu police child abuse investigations.
