Islanders newcomer ready to lay it on line

SHAYNE KAJIOKA

It took one practice for lineman Shayne Kajioka to convince the Hawaiian Islanders coaching staff he's ready for game action.

Kajioka took a physical last week, participated in his first full-contact practice Tuesday and traveled with the team Wednesday for its arenafootball2 game today against the Bossier-Shreveport (La.) Battle Wings. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. HST at the Century Tel Center.

"This is my first day coming out," Kajioka said after Tuesday's practice. "I'm a little rusty, but I'll get the WD-40 out and I'll be ready."

Kajioka made the 19-man travel roster for today's game because lineman Antoine Simpson was placed on short-term injured reserve with a mild concussion.

Islanders head coach Cal Lee was already familiar with Kajioka, having been his head coach at Saint Louis School for three years.

Last season, Lee was in his first season as linebackers coach at the University of Hawai'i, and Kajioka was a senior offensive lineman for the Warriors.

Kajioka contacted Lee about a month ago about trying out for the Islanders. At the time, Lee recalled telling him, "Don't come out until you're ready."

Kajioka said he's been working out at UH to get ready for the Islanders season.

"I was working out before this so my shape and conditioning is good right now," said Kajioka, who is 6 foot 2 and 300 pounds.

Kajioka has primarily played offensive line in his career, but he'll have to play on the other side of the ball in af2.

"I think he's probably going to struggle maybe defensively because he doesn't know all the defensive schemes, but offensively he's right there. It's like he's been with us for a month," linemen coach Frank Pahia said.

As far as the rules of arena football, Kajioka is learning on the fly.

"He doesn't know the rules, but by the time we fly over there (Bossier-Shreveport) he'll know all the rules," Lee said.Ê

Out with old, in with new: The Islanders are coming off an emotional 45-40 home victory over the Bakersfield Blitz on Saturday, which Lee wants them to forget about.

"They knew it was a big emotional win on Saturday, but Monday they were back to focused," Lee said. "That's what you got to do, win or a loss, you have to come back and start again. Forget about what happened last week and try to cover the mistakes that you did, try to get better every day."

Bossier-Shreveport (1-3) will be out for revenge after falling to the Islanders, 63-60, on April 17 at Blaisdell Arena.

The Islanders (3-1) may have ruffled the Battle Wings' feathers after a minor scuffle broke out on the field after the Islanders' Anthony Arceneaux scored on a game-clinching 20-yard interception return with 22 seconds remaining.

Bossier-Shreveport quarterback Sherard Poteete had to be restrained by a Battle Wings assistant and Islanders defensive coordinator Doug Semones was ejected after the melee.

"We're going to their house," Islanders fullback/linebacker Keiki Misipeka said. "The way the game finished when we played them, we got into a little scuffle with the quarterback and the coaches and I'm sure they're looking forward to seeing us."

It took the Islanders seven hours to get to Bossier-Shreveport, and they will be playing on short rest.

"We play Friday. It doesn't change anything," Lee said. "We have to prepare one less day, but other than that we'll be ready to go."

Injury report: In addition to Simpson, wide receiver/linebacker Robert Kemfort (ankle) was placed on short-term IR. Wide receiver/linebacker Gabe Amey (knee) and lineman Morrie Roe (calf) were transferred from the short-term to long-term IR.
