ISLAND SOUNDS
'Rumble' mixes it up with Mai Tai acts

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

A mixed plate of up-and-coming acts offers variety aplenty.

And a Polynesian act taps modern influences to yield a vibrant sound of South Seas syncopation.

"MAI TAI BAR RUMBLE" by various artists; Shaka Records.

Genre: Island contemporary, world music.

Distinguishing notes: This is a compilation of mostly next-generation acts who have participated in the Mai Tai Bar's third "rumble," a parade of emerging talent. The performers share originals and covers, creating their own sparks. Kimo & Cory's "September" is a gentle remake of an Earth Wind & Fire sizzler; Courtney New's "Headed in the Right Direction" portends a bright future; Kimo Opiana's

"You and I" is a rockaballad loaded with sentiment and appeal; Cory Oliveros reinvents "My Cheri Amour" with (Stevie) Wonder-ful emotions; Wasabi's "Mony Mony" has nostalgic power; Backyard Paina's "Where I Want to Be" has soulful energy to spare. Others aboard: De Andre Bradshaw, Country Fire, Epic Session, Fool Around Kine.

The outlook: Variety is the spice here — different strokes by different folks.

Our take: A mixed plate of budding talent, waiting for your seal of approval.

"September" by Kimo & Cory. Audio sample available in mp3 format.

"THE COLLABORATION" by Pacific Soul; Shaka Records.

Genre: South Seas, world music.

Distinguishing notes: This is a vibrant group of Polynesians, who mix traditional Pacific sounds and styles with modern influences. Lead voices by Lavina Williams and Lole Usoali'i punctuate the pulsating syncopation of Samoa, Tahiti, New Zealand and Hawai'i — with a difference. Lyrics are both native and English, and elements of soul, funk and hip-hop hurl the combo from South Seas status to a more mainstream world music realm. This is not your grandmother's Polynesian songbag. "You're So Shy," "Amusia Si'l Feitu'u 'Oe Po," "Samoan National Anthem" and "I Like It" all have an allure.

The outlook: There's a lot of energy and earnesty in this effort.

Our take: Changing times reflect changing traditions.

"You're So Shy" by Pacific Soul. Audio sample available in mp3 format.
