HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Board seeks 4 new members

Advertiser Staff

The Pearl City Neighborhood Board is trying to fill four vacant positions on its 13-member board.

The board needs more representation from the eastern side of the district, including Waiau and Waimalu, said board member David Lemon.

"The condominium associations are also not heavily represented," Lemon said. "There are major changes occurring (in the district) and now is the time to get involved."

Anyone interested in serving on the board should attend the Aug. 31 meeting, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. the Pearl City Library, 1138 Waimano Home Road.

One vacant position was recently filled by Marin Bogema. Other board members are Albert Fukushima, chairman; Sheila Fukuda, vice chairwoman; and Solray Duncan, David Howton, May Imamura, J. Joshua Kaye, James Pickard Sr. and Lemon.

Bone marrow donors sought

KAHULUI, Maui — A bone marrow donor registration drive will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center.

The drive is being sponsored by the Hawai'i Government Employees Association's Community Action Committee on behalf of Maui Memorial Medical Center worker Vicki Eto, who has a serious disorder that requires a bone marrow transplant.

Eto, a mother of two school-aged children, was diagnosed last September with myelodysplastic syndrome, a condition in which her bone marrow is not making enough red blood cells. Patients with the disorder sometimes develop acute leukemia. Even if they don't get leukemia, patients can expect to live only an average of 3› years after diagnosis unless they receive a bone marrow transplant.

During the registry event, a small sample of blood will be drawn from potential donors and sent to a laboratory for tissue typing. Donor candidates must be between 18 and 60 years old and in good health. For details, call the Hawai'i Bone Marrow Donor Registry at 547-6154 or, toll-free, (877) 443-6667.
